Energy Efficiency Alberta was front and centre at the recent Alberta Energy Efficiency Summit in Edmonton. More than 200 energy professionals, service providers, educators and thought leaders were on hand to learn about the latest trends in energy efficiency and to hear about the incredible results that energy efficiency can offer.
I had the opportunity to deliver a keynote presentation discussing how Alberta has become a national energy efficiency success story in two short years. Also, I spoke about what the future holds, including the role of innovation and the bold actions required to deliver on the full potential of energy efficiency for all Albertans. I have provided some of the highlights from my speech as well as some new performance numbers in the infographic below that our programs are delivering to Albertans.
In our first 18 months of operations, Energy Efficiency Alberta has invested approximately $170 million into energy efficiency and renewable energy, with projects completed in every postal code in the province. For every dollar invested, Alberta is getting three back. That adds up to $510 million in energy savings over the lifetime of the more than 15 million products installed in Alberta industrial facilities, businesses and homes.
Alberta is also seeing $720 million in economic growth and, perhaps most importantly, about 3,600 job-years are being created. That means local jobs for architects and engineers, electrical and HVAC contractors, solar installers, retailers, distributors and manufacturers – that have designed, supplied and installed projects across the province and as a result benefit from the market demand and related business activity that is boosting their businesses.
The impressive results we’re seeing clearly demonstrate that energy efficiency is already an important component of our economy. Alberta’s energy efficiency sector is real and is growing — creating jobs, helping diversify our economy, and making energy efficiency and renewable energy industries stronger and more competitive. We’re proud of how we’re contributing to Alberta’s economy and continue to share our story.
