Making a difference, one upgrade at a time

Starting a home improvement project can be a difficult investment, especially in a tough economic climate. Home contractors have been feeling the crunch for the past 2 years, but some have started to notice a turn for the better since Energy Efficiency Alberta’s Home Improvement Rebate Program started this spring.

The program works with contractors across the province to offer up to $6000 in rebates to Alberta households on energy efficient upgrades. IDEAL Insulation, based in Calgary, is now a participating contractor in the program, offering attic insulation upgrades.

Colin, sales and estimating manager, says IDEAL Insulation is noticing a difference.

“Since the rebate went live on April 28, there’s been an uptick in people choosing to proceed [with upgrades] compared to the previous 2 years when there was a recession, money was tighter, and people might not have had the disposable funds to invest in these types of improvements. The rebate creates incentive for people to make that investment.”

Colin notes the impact of the program on participants as well.

“If someone has an older home, say 40 plus years with original insulation or just insufficient insulation by today’s standards, the rebate dollars can be significant,” he explains. “Attics get hot, roofs attract a lot of sun and a lot of heat. If you have a poorly insulated attic, it’s putting a lot of heat back into the rooms below, usually bedrooms. In the winter time, if your attic is poorly insulated you’re losing a lot of heat through that attic too.”

Energy Efficiency Alberta’s rebates are available for insulation added to a home’s attic, main walls, or basement. Rebates are based on where insulation is applied, how much is added, and how many square feet are upgraded. The rebate for just insulation upgrades can reach a maximum of $3500.

“Even $1000 can make a house more energy efficient, more comfortable,” Colin continues. “It [the rebate] does make a difference, and anecdotally, I get a lot of people really happy with it.”
