Consumer Protection

What to do to protect yourself and avoid scams

To help you protect yourself from illegal or predatory business practices, we’ve put together some tips on how to stay safe.

To avoid phone scams:

  • If someone tries to sell you something under Energy Efficiency Alberta’s name, it is not Energy Efficiency Alberta. Hang up and call the consumer protection line at 1-877-427-4088.
  • If you are unsure or feel uneasy about a call you have received regarding energy efficiency services, immediately hang up and call 1-844-357-5604 to talk with an Energy Efficiency Alberta representative.

For all door-to-door sales visits:

  • Always ask for official company-issued identification.
  • Never feel pressured to sign contracts on your doorsteps.
  • Be cautious of any door-to-door offer.
  • Call the consumer protection line at 1-877-427-4088 with any questions.
  • Visit servicealberta.ca to learn more about consumer rights.

How to report suspicious behaviour

To report anyone you feel is misrepresenting themselves, call the Service Alberta consumer protection line at 1-877-427-4088.

Remember:

  • Energy Efficiency Alberta will NEVER try to sell you something.
  • Energy Efficiency Alberta will NEVER come to your home uninvited.
  • Energy Efficiency Alberta programs do NOT include air conditioning units or furnaces.

Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program

What to expect:

Appointment set up and Energy Efficiency Alberta installer home visits

The Residential No Cost Energy Savings Program is being delivered on behalf of Energy Efficiency Alberta by a company called Ecofitt.

After you’ve registered for the Residential No Charge Energy Savings Program, an Energy Efficiency Alberta installer from Ecofitt will contact you to set up an appointment. They will be very clear that they are calling you about the program you registered for – the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program. If you have not registered for this program, they are NOT an Energy Efficiency Alberta representative.

Once your appointment is scheduled, the day prior to your appointment, the installer from Energy Efficiency Alberta will call to confirm your appointment. The day of your appointment, a trained installer, wearing his/her Energy Efficiency Alberta shirt and badge, will come to your home at the time that you had confirmed (with the homeowner’s approval) in a clearly marked Energy Efficiency Alberta van.

The installer will conduct a walk-through assessment of your home’s efficiency. Most visits don’t take longer than two hours. During the appointment, the installer will install energy efficient products in your home and show you how to use them. The installer will take the old products and responsibly recycle and dispose of them.

Installer training and background checks

All Energy Efficiency Alberta installers go through a comprehensive installer training course designed and run by experienced installers who have extensive experience. A criminal record check, a background check and a reference check are included in this process.

What to watch out for:

Door-to-door or cold-calling energy sales

  • The Government of Alberta and Energy Efficiency Alberta will never go door-to-door or cold-call Albertans. Albertans will be able to participate in the program only if they contact Energy Efficiency Alberta directly through the website or our 1-844 number and make an appointment.
  • Alberta Government Legislation protects consumers by banning door-to-door sales of energy products, so no representatives of any company dealing in Energy-related services can come to your door without an invitation.

Company Names

Some companies may try to contact you using a misleading name.

Some companies have been reported to present themselves as “Ecofitt.” Ecofitt is the company working with Energy Efficiency Alberta to deliver the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program, and some scammers have used their name. If you feel uneasy talking to someone who has presented as being from Ecofitt, hang up immediately and call our toll-free number 1-844-357-5604 to talk with an Energy Efficiency Alberta representative.

Residential Retail Products Program – Home Improvement Rebates

What to expect:

For this program, you will work with a participating contractor that is independent from Energy Efficiency Alberta.

We always recommend that you seek up to three quotes from different contractors.

Contractors listed on our website have proven that they:

  • Are fully licensed – a legally registered business in the province.
  • Have $2 million in liability insurance and Worker Safety insurance.
  • Are registered with Workers Compensation Board (WCB).
  • Have or will participate in future training as it becomes available to maintain their status in the network.
  • Possess a GST number – to confirm their business is in operation and registered.

However, with the safe-guards in place, we still recommend that you investigate contractors for yourself.

When working with a contractor:

  • Always insist on a written contract.
  • Check references – other satisfied customers are a great sign.
  • Call the consumer protection line at 1-877-427-4088 if you have any concerns.
  • Visit servicealberta.ca to learn more about consumer rights.
  • If you have any questions, call the Consumer Contact Centre in Edmonton at 780-427-4088, toll-free in Alberta at 1-877-427-4088 or visit their website at servicealberta.ca.

How to report scams or make complaints:

If you have an issue with your contractor, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. Also, please inform Summerhill at (844) 357-5604, to help monitor, coach, train and potentially de-list a contractor not meeting customer experience expectations.
