Ever wonder how much heat your home is losing?

Energy Efficiency Alberta has partnered with MyHEAT to offer an eye-opening technology to Albertans across 10 cities. The MyHEAT platform provides an aerial heat map of single-family residential homes to show areas within the home with the most heat loss, in addition to a heat rating – a relative measure of how much heat is being lost compared to other communities and houses.

Who is MyHEAT?

MyHEAT offers a web-based platform that allows users to identify the amount and location of heat escaping homes, communities, and cities. Located in Calgary, the company is implementing cutting-edge technology and data processing methods based on seven years of award-winning, peer-reviewed research from the University of Calgary.

How does it work?

MyHEAT collects aerial thermal infrared imagery across entire cities. First, a plane flies over a city to collect data between the hours of 11:00 pm and 4:00 am, when the temperature outside is below 8°C. Collection for a city the size of Calgary would typically take three nights.

The raw thermal data then undergoes a patented process to reveal an individual building’s heat loss details, as well as comparable energy efficiency metrics across a town or city. The result is personalized HEAT Maps and HEAT Ratings for single-family homes.

HEAT Maps

HEAT Maps show potential heat loss areas in a building from a bird’s-eye view.

In this thermal image, red is assigned to the hottest temperature measured, and blue is assigned to the coolest.

HEAT Ratings

Homes are also given a HEAT Rating, which is a relative measure of how much heat a home is losing.

Owners can compare their home’s heat loss to others in their community.

How can I improve my HEAT rating?

Receive a $300 rebate when you sign up for a Home Energy Evaluation. The Evaluation will help you find out why your home is losing energy and ways to improve it. Once you receive your Home Energy Evaluation, you can make energy-efficient upgrades to your home and receive additional rebates.

Rebates are available for a wide range of energy-efficient upgrades including insulation, windows, water heating, furnaces, home heating and more (specific product eligibility applies). The more energy you save, the higher the rebate. Plus, you can receive a bonus rebate of $1,000 if you complete three or more home improvements.
