Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program

A no-charge way to improve your energy efficiency, and your home.

Albertans are excited about energy efficiency. The Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program is now fully subscribed and registration is closed. Everyone who registered will be addressed by summer 2018. We are continuing to contact all registrants to schedule installations.

The Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program is now fully subscribed and registration is closed. Everyone who registered will be addressed by summer 2018. We are continuing to contact all registrants to schedule installations.

This program has been embraced by Albertans, surpassing all expectations for participation, energy savings and greenhouse gas reductions. When installations for all 150,000 registrants are complete, this will equate to Albertans saving 700,000 gigajoules of energy annually, and a reduction of more than 20,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of taking 8,000 cars off Alberta roads, or enough energy for 5,800 homes for a year. Participating Albertans will have also saved almost three million litres of water, enough to fill 1,000 Olympic swimming pools.

How does it work?

  1. If you registered for the program, you will receive your installation. If you have not received any communication from Energy Efficiency Alberta since registering, something is wrong and needs to be fixed. Please call 1-844-357-5604 and ask for the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program.
  2. You will receive a call to schedule your installation, and a second call from the installer the day prior to their visit.
  3. An installer will visit your home, and conduct a walkthrough to identify potential opportunities for energy-efficient upgrades at no charge. You will receive your home installation within one year from the time that you registered for the program.
  4. The installer will upgrade your home to energy-efficient products, and show you how to use them. Most installations take between one and three hours.
  5. You’ll save money and conserve energy—immediately. And the products are yours to keep at no charge!

What kinds of products are included?

Inefficient products will be replaced with more energy-efficient products, as described below:

In a detached home:

  • Existing incandescent nightlights and light bulbs will be replaced with LED products (installers will only exchange working, incandescent nightlights and light bulbs).
  • Inefficient shower heads will be replaced with high-efficiency shower heads.
  • Faucet aerators will be installed if no aerator is present.
  • A ‘no power bar’ or a ‘traditional power bar’ will be replaced with a smart power bar (in instances where at least two electronics and one television can be plugged into a single power bar).
  • A single, working, ‘non-programmable thermostat’ will be replaced with a single smart (self-adjusting) thermostat.

In condos, apartments, townhomes and other Multi-Unit Residential Building (MURBs):

  • Existing incandescent nightlights, light bulbs and exit signs will be replaced with LED products (installers will only exchange working, incandescent nightlights, light bulbs and exit signs).
  • Inefficient shower heads will be replaced with high-efficiency shower heads.
  • Faucet aerators will be installed if no aerator is present.
  • Smart power bars and smart thermostats will not be installed in a MURB because they are a much less impactful energy-saving measure in those environments. For example, smart thermostats generally do not save as much energy in MURBs as they do in single-family homes because there is already significant ambient heat from other units and less exposure to cold air, making temperature control a less effective energy-efficiency tool.
