Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program

When will Albertans who have registered receive their installations?

Everyone who registered will be addressed by summer 2018. We continue to contact registrants to schedule installations, and anyone who hasn’t been scheduled yet will be contacted shortly.

Can I still register for the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program?

The program is now fully subscribed and registration closed on November 6. All other programs remain open for participation.

Why have you closed registration for the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program?

The program is now fully subscribed and it has exceed all expectations for participation, energy savings, and greenhouse gas reductions, so we have closed registrations. Just over 150,000 households have registered. This represents a critical mass of Albertans signing up for the program – 12% of all single-family households – and they have, or will have, practical, energy-efficient products installed in their homes.

Are you closing registrations on any of your other programs?

No. All our other programs remain open for participation.

I am interested in being an installer for this program.

Is there any charge for getting LED bulbs installed? Is installation free, and homeowners pay for new products?

The program replaces eligible products at no charge to residents. Eligible products and installation of all products are at no charge to residents.

What products are included in the program?

Inefficient products will be replaced with more energy efficient products, as described below. Generally:

  • existing incandescent nightlights, light bulbs and exit signs will be replaced with LED products;
  • inefficient shower heads will be replaced with high efficiency shower heads;
  • faucet aerators will be installed if no aerator is present;
  • ‘no power bar’ or a ‘traditional power bar’ will be replaced with an advanced power bar (in instances where at least two electronics and one television can be plugged into a single power bar); and,
  • a ‘non-programmable thermostat’ will be replaced with a smart (self-adjusting) thermostat.
What specific products will be installed in my home? Do you have product specifications available?

All products being installed are Ecofitt branded products, with the exception of the Ecobee thermostat and the Embertec Emberstrip AV+ Advanced Power Strip. The products installed will be finalized when the installer visits your home.

Are washing machines, windows, furnaces, tankless hot water heaters, or insulation included in this incentive program?

No, these products are not available through the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program, which offers direct, no-charge installation of energy savings products to residences (homeowners and tenants). Inefficient products will be replaced with more energy efficient products, as described below. Generally:

  • existing incandescent nightlights, light bulbs and exit signs will be replaced with LED products;

Registration for the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program is now closed.

Some of these products are included in the Residential Retail Products Program which launched on April 28, 2017.

I did not get a confirmation email when I registered.

Energy Efficiency Alberta will send you a confirmation email if chose ‘email’ as your preferred method of communication (the default on the registration form is ‘phone’). Otherwise, if you selected ‘phone’ or ‘text’ as your preferred method of communication, you will not receive confirmation.

If your contact information was incorrect when you registered (wrong email or phone number), please contact us.

Someone from “Ecofitt” called us to schedule an energy audit on our air conditioning and furnaces. Is this actually someone from Ecofitt or is this a scam?

This is a scam. An Ecofitt installer will contact you beginning in April after you register for the program online. They will be very clear that they are calling you about the program you registered for – the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program.

No air conditioning units (AC) or furnaces are included in this program. The only products that will be replaced will be inefficient products listed in question 7.

 The day prior to your appointment, the installer will call to confirm your appointment. The day of your appointment, a trained installer, wearing his/her Energy Efficiency Alberta shirt and badge, will come to your home at the time that you had confirmed (with the homeowner’s approval) in a clearly marked Ecofitt minivan. The installer will conduct a walk-through assessment of its efficiency. Most visits don’t take longer than two hours. During the appointment, the installer will install energy efficient products in your home and show you how to use them. The installer will take the old products and responsibly recycle and dispose of them.
