Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program – FAQ

I am interested in being an installer for this program.
Ecofitt is a third-party service provider hired to manage the delivery of the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program. With an office in Calgary, Ecofitt specializes in the delivery of energy and water conservation programs across Canada.

Ecofitt is hiring a number of individuals in a variety of positions to deliver the program to Albertans. Interested applicants can find out more about the jobs by clicking on the careers tab at ecofitt.ca.

How do I participate if I live in a condo or apartment building?
In order to participate, all tenants need to do is to provide the contact information for their landlord on the online registration form. Once the tenant includes their landlord's information, Ecofitt will take it from there. Ecofitt will be coordinating multiple installs with condo boards and building management.

If you are a condo unit owner, you are eligible for upgrades in your own suite. Ecofitt will be asking for your condo board or building manager contact information when scheduling appointments, as they will be working to coordinate installs in condo/apartment buildings through the condo board/building manager.

Individual condo units are eligible for upgrades through approval by the unit owner. Common areas in condo buildings are eligible for upgrades and will be coordinated through the condo board/building manager. Multi-unit residential rental buildings are eligible for upgrades once authorization has been provided by the building owner/manager. When Ecofitt calls to schedule your installation, all upgrades will be discussed and coordinated.

Is the program available to all Albertans?
Yes, the program is available to all Albertans in both rural and urban areas. When you sign up on the online registration form, please input your address in both the ‘street number’ and ‘street name’ fields, even if you use a PO Box or other rural address. Ecofitt will be able to confirm your address when they call to schedule your appointment, starting in early April.
Is there any charge for getting LED bulbs installed? Is installation free, and homeowners pay for new products?
The program replaces eligible products at no charge to residents. Eligible products and installation of all products are at no charge to residents.
What products are included in the program?
Inefficient products will be replaced with more energy efficient products, as described below. Generally:

  • existing incandescent nightlights, light bulbs and exit signs will be replaced with LED products;
  • inefficient shower heads will be replaced with high efficiency shower heads;
  • faucet aerators will be installed if no aerator is present;
  • ‘no power bar’ or a ‘traditional power bar’ will be replaced with an advanced power bar; and,
  • a ‘non-programmable thermostat’ will be replaced with a smart (self-adjusting) thermostat.
What specific products will be installed in my home? Do you have product specifications available?
All products being installed are Ecofitt branded products, with the exception of the Ecobee thermostat. The products installed will be finalized when the installer visits your home.
Are washing machines, windows, furnaces, tankless hot water heaters, or insulation included in this incentive program?
No, these products are not available through the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program, which offers direct, no-charge installation of energy savings products to residences (homeowners and tenants). Inefficient products will be replaced with more energy efficient products, as described below. Generally:

  • existing incandescent nightlights, light bulbs and exit signs will be replaced with LED products;
  • inefficient shower heads will be replaced with high efficiency shower heads;
  • faucet aerators will be installed if no aerator is present;
  • ‘no power bar’ or a ‘traditional power bar’ will be replaced with an advanced power bar; and,
  • a ‘non-programmable thermostat’ will be replaced with a smart (self-adjusting) thermostat.

Registration for the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program is currently open.

Some of these products are included in the Residential Retail Products Program which is set to launch in spring 2017.

I did not get a confirmation email when I registered.
Energy Efficiency Alberta will send you a confirmation email if chose ‘email’ as your preferred method of communication (the default on the registration form is ‘phone’). Otherwise, if you selected ‘phone’ or ‘text’ as your preferred method of communication, you will not receive confirmation.

If your contact information was incorrect when you registered (wrong email or phone number), please contact us.

Someone from “Ecofitt” called us to schedule an energy audit on our air conditioning and furnaces. Is this actually someone from Ecofitt or is this a scam?
This is a scam. An Ecofitt installer will contact you beginning in April after you register for the program online. They will be very clear that they are calling you about the program you registered for – the Residential No-Charge Energy Savings Program.

No air conditioning units (AC) or furnaces are included in this program. The only products that will be replaced will be inefficient products listed in question 7.

 The day prior to your appointment, the installer will call to confirm your appointment. The day of your appointment, a trained installer, wearing his/her Energy Efficiency Alberta shirt and badge, will come to your home at the time that you had confirmed (with the homeowner’s approval) in a clearly marked Ecofitt minivan. The installer will conduct a walk-through assessment of its efficiency. Most visits don’t take longer than two hours. During the appointment, the installer will install energy efficient products in your home and show you how to use them. The installer will take the old products and responsibly recycle and dispose of them.
